Global Swede

Yesterday, the 12th of May, current entrepreneurship Master's student Ziad El-Awad at the Sten K. Johnson Centre for Entrepreneurship, School of Economics and Management at Lund University, was awarded the Global Swede Award by the Swedish Minister for Trade, Ewa Björling, during an annual graduation ceremony at the State Department.

The Global Swede Award is presented to an international student who is considered "a good ambassador for the university and for Sweden" and who has distinguished him/herself through creativity, entrepreneurship or innovation within the academic discipline. Each institution of higher education in Sweden may nominate a candidate, and Lund University was represented this year by Ziad El-Awad from Jordan.

Ziad has experience in higher education in Lebanon, the U.S., the UK - and now Sweden. He is also co-founder of a company exporting food and foodstuffs. According to Ziad, the choice to study entrepreneurship in Sweden was no coincidence.

– I chose to study entrepreneurship at the School of Economics and Management at Lund University due to the programme's reputation, but also to gain insight into the Swedish business culture. I aspire to continue with my current food business, taking bigger steps in establishing a new line of organic products for the Middle East and the Gulf region.

We are in no doubt that Ziad is an entrepreneur to the core.

I feel that nothing is more exhilarating than taking an idea and building a business out of it, he adds.

The Global Swede Award is a collaboration between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Institute. The concept can be seen as a complement to "Project Cosmopolitan“, which aims to utilize the unique skills of foreign-born individuals to increase foreign trade, create more jobs and increase growth.

Ziad is the second of our Master's students in entrepreneurship to receive the Global Swede award in recent years.
