Grant applications

Information and guidance

Our research is funded by governmental or external grants, as salary or as stipends. When it comes to external grants, the department might be expected to co-finance both salary and so-called indirect costs. Furthermore, external funding of research might cause planning issues in teaching. Therefore, you should always inform the Assistant Head of Department in charge of your subject area of your intentions to apply for grants.

The crucial issue for the department is the co-financing of external projects. Our governmental means received from the Faculty for research are limited and it is therefore important to coordinate the application process (see Checklist for applicants).

Eligibility – Who can apply for grants?

Eligible applicants are those having a permanent contract of employment or an employment in progress. We can also apply for unnamed positions provided the position is fully funded for at least four years, and given that it will be advertised publicly in competition. The Department is always the administrator of grants received.

The Head of Department (prefekten) or the Director of Research makes the decision whether or not to approve your application. An approval of a grant application also involves an approval of co-financing of the project costs in full if needed. Every contributor of grants approves only eligible costs and some of them do not approve OH-costs for conferences. Therefore you have to check the terms and conditions of the donor and to contact the Head of Department or the Director of Research before you apply. Grant applications to The Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, VR), Formas and Forte that require special approval in PRISMA by the Head of Department have to be ready for approval 3 days before the last day. If you need help with the budget for the project, you can turn to Anders Nyström.

Always notify Anders Nyström when you have applied for a grant or a stipend.

Some donors require a certificate of approval from the Department for co-funding of indirect cost. You will find an example on Department’s website.
